TØNDER: As the first municipality in Denmark, Tønder has decided to conduct indicative referendums among neighbors as part of the public consultation on renewable energy projects. The most recent of these referendums did not go well for the green energy transition. Of the five planned solar parks that were up for a vote, only one project received support from the neighbors. This is reported by JydskeVestkysten.
At Løgumkloster, a 69-hectare project received support from almost 59 percent of the votes. The other four projects in Ballum, Lovrup, Tyvse and Bredebro were voted down. The votes, which took place among neighbors within a radius of 1250 meters from the proposed solar parks, showed low to moderate voter turnout – from 19.4 to 52.4 percent. The results are not binding, but are included as a consultation response in the further political consideration. The total area for the five projects is approximately 800 hectares – half of the total renewable energy plan in the municipality.
- The results show that we were right. Now we are faced with a mishmash of a political majority that wants development in this area, and citizens who largely want to maintain the status quo, says Anita Uggerholt Eriksen, who is the group chairwoman of Tønder List.
The politicians are expected to take a final position on the projects in August or September, after reviewing all consultation responses.
