European Energy has inaugurated an expansion of the solar park at Kvosted in Viborg Municipality, where a large battery system has been integrated into the existing plant. With the addition of the battery, which has a storage capacity of 200 MWh, the project is the largest combined solar and battery park in Northern Europe, European Energy said in a press release.
The battery is connected to the existing solar park and was connected to the grid in December 2025. After commissioning in January 2026, the plant is now fully operational. According to the company, the battery can store electricity equivalent to a day's electricity consumption for around 18,000 households.
The purpose of the expansion is to be able to store electricity during periods of high solar production and deliver it to the grid when production is lower. At the same time, the battery can relieve the electricity grid in situations of local overproduction and thus reduce the need to limit solar production.
- By combining solar production and battery storage in Kvosted, the energy park has been upgraded to a hybrid solution that can produce, store and deliver electricity more flexibly. This strengthens the interaction between renewable energy and the electricity grid, says Knud Erik Andersen, CEO of European Energy.
European Energy states that the company is working with battery storage in several countries and currently has a development portfolio of over 12 GW of battery capacity globally, including in Denmark, Australia, Poland, the UK and Germany.
