Energinet now prioritizes "ready-to-run projects" in the fight for the electricity grid's capacity

A new prioritization model, which was put into use from February 1, is intended to ensure faster processing of renewable energy and industrial projects that are furthest along in the approval process.

The electricity grid has increasingly become a scarce resource, and the pressure from new production and consumption plants for green electricity is growing. Energinet has therefore introduced a new prioritization model, which is intended to ensure that "the most ready-made projects" are prioritized in the case processing and thus are given the opportunity for faster access to the transmission grid. Previously, there was a queue principle, but with the new model, which came into effect on 1 February 2026, this will no longer apply. Energinet states this in a press release.

The new prioritization model was created after a consultation process, where industry players and grid customers have had the opportunity to submit comments. Among other things, the model means that projects that are furthest along in the municipal approval process and can be connected more quickly will be processed first.

- The new prioritization model has been well received by the industry and by our grid customers. I am pleased that Energinet now has broad support from stakeholders to address the solar parks and industrial plants that are furthest along in the municipal approval process and can also be connected to the grid more quickly, says Kim Willerslev Jakobsen, Director of System Responsibility at Energinet.

The new model comes as a consequence of a great deal of confidence in Energinet's case processing. In 2025, the company received an average of one application for grid connection every three days. In total, the applications represented a consumption or production of 28,400 MW.

The significant growth in new plants supports the green transition, but at the same time puts significant pressure on the capacity of the grid. The expansion of the grid takes time and requires new working methods if the waiting time for grid connection is to be reduced.

Energinet also points out that the demand from, among other things, data centers, battery systems and solar parks is so great that even an extensive grid expansion cannot keep up. Therefore, the company is working both to optimize the utilization of the existing electricity grid and with new collaborations with developers and electricity grid companies to accelerate the planning and connection of new plants.

- The electricity grid needs new political decisions and adjustment of the framework conditions, and therefore we at Energinet are pleased that the Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities has now announced that he will look at new initiatives, says Kim Willerslev Jakobsen.
