These are positive signs that have come from US President Donald Trump in connection with the World Economic Forum in Davos. This is what Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) said to DR on Wednesday evening.
- Trump says that "I will not attack Greenland", it also seems like a completely wild thought, and the tariff war has been put on standby. It is at least positive, says the Foreign Minister.
Before the interview with DR, Lars Løkke Rasmussen briefly spoke with the Secretary General of the NATO defense alliance, Mark Rutte, who met with Trump on Wednesday.
- Based on a very productive meeting that I have had with the Secretary General of NATO, Mark Rutte, we have prepared the framework for a future agreement regarding Greenland and in fact the entire Arctic, Donald Trump wrote on Wednesday evening on his social media Truth Social.
According to the president, this solution, if implemented, will be a "great gain for the United States and all NATO countries".
- Based on this agreement, I will not introduce the tariffs that were to come into effect on February 1, Trump continued about the announced tariffs for European countries.
Trump said that he would impose a ten percent tariff on the countries from February 1. The tariff would increase to 25 percent on June 1 if an agreement has not yet been reached.
Greenland not for sale
Donald Trump has long wanted the United States to own Greenland in order to ensure security in the Arctic region, where Russia and China also have interests.
But that is not going to happen, says Lars Løkke Rasmussen. Donald Trump has called on NBC for the Foreign Minister to say it face to face that Denmark rejects negotiations to sell Greenland.
- I would very much like to say it to his face. I think it is somewhat important that we get away from this with us saying something and he saying something, says Lars Løkke Rasmussen to DR.
