
The electricity company Modstrøm has agreed to pay a fine of 400,000 kroner for violating the ban on unsolicited telephone sales and misleading marketing. The Consumer Ombudsman writes this on its website.
The Consumer Ombudsman has reported the electricity company to the police twice. The first police report was in the autumn of 2022, and the second was in 2025. 27 consumers have stated that they have received an unsolicited telephone call from Modstrøm.
In addition, eight consumers have confirmed that they have experienced being misled by salespeople from Modstrøm. According to the Consumer Ombudsman, the salespeople have given the impression that they were calling from the customers' current electricity company. Electricity companies are allowed to call customers for the purpose of telephone sales, but only if consent has been given.
- We take the matter very seriously, including not least the fact that the company has previously violated the ban on unsolicited telephone sales and the ban on misleading marketing, says Consumer Ombudsman Torben Jensen to the website.
In 2021, Modstrøm also agreed to pay a fine. Back then, there were also unsolicited calls, while there was also misleading information on the electricity company's website. At that time, the fine was 675,000 kroner.
The Consumer Ombudsman reminds you that as a consumer you have a 14-day right of withdrawal when making a telephone sale. You can simply send an email to the electricity company stating that you regret the agreement.
If the 14-day right of withdrawal has expired, the agreement is still invalid if you as a customer did not consent to being called by the seller, or if you have been misled into entering into the agreement.
Ritzau has tried to get a comment from the electricity company Modstrøm, but without success.
