Hydrogen industry: Green hydrogen must not be squeezed by low-carbon alternatives

New EU legislation could open up support for fossil-based hydrogen, warns the hydrogen industry and calls on the government to stick to green ambitions.

The EU Commission's new legislation on low-carbon hydrogen is causing concern among the hydrogen industry, which fears that the rules could lead to increased use of fossil-based hydrogen instead of green hydrogen. The organization is therefore calling on the government to use the EU presidency to ensure that support is reserved for green solutions.

- There is a significant risk that green hydrogen and low-carbon hydrogen could compete for the same funds, e.g. at the European hydrogen bank. This would be a major setback for green development, and would slow down both the strong hydrogen and PtX development and the expansion of renewable energy, and would also hamper one of the strongest industrial cards we have in hand both in Denmark and in the EU. It is therefore crucial that the Danish government during the EU presidency stands firm on the green demands and ambitions. Especially in this area, but of course also in general, says Tejs Laustsen Jensen, CEO of the Hydrogen Industry, in a press release.

The so-called Low Carbon Hydrogen Delegated Act was issued by the EU Commission on Tuesday evening. The legal act is to certify hydrogen that is produced with fossil fuels combined with carbon capture or nuclear power, but which does not meet the criteria for renewable energy.

The hydrogen industry emphasizes that although there may be a need for low-carbon hydrogen in the EU, the focus must not be shifted from green hydrogen produced with renewable energy. According to CEO Tejs Laustsen Jensen, there is a risk that low-carbon hydrogen will be used to meet renewable energy targets and gain access to support schemes.

- We are in a situation where there is pressure from some member states for fewer green solutions, including that low-carbon hydrogen can be used as an 'easy' way to meet targets, and that would be a very unfortunate development. We cannot and should not meet renewable energy targets with fossil-based hydrogen, says Tejs Laustsen Jensen.
