The world's largest factory for offshore high-voltage cables, which includes the construction of the second tallest tower in Northern Europe. This is what the expansion of NKT's offshore high-voltage cable factory in Karlskrona, Sweden, will result in when it is fully completed.
To keep the electricity running for the project, NKT has entered into a partnership with ABB Distribution Solutions to supply power to the expanded facilities. ABB said in a press release.
The production facility will be expanded with a new factory and a third extrusion tower, making the facility the world's largest factory for offshore high-voltage cables. NKT's expanded facility will produce high-voltage cables of up to 640 kV DC, products that play a crucial role in supporting the global energy transition.
- The investment in the facility will enable us to produce the amount of cables required to connect up to ten average offshore wind farms per year with a total capacity of 20 GW - enough to power around 15-20 million homes, says Darren Fennell, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of NKT in Karlskrona.
In the new tower, the cable will hang in a vertical position while its insulation system is applied and cooled properly during production. It will run 24/7, so ensuring uninterrupted power supply is a top priority.
- ABB can provide a solution that meets our high availability requirements. The company has supplied the power supply for the existing plant and as we expand, we choose to continue a relationship that works well with a partner who has reliable, high-quality equipment, says Darren Fennell.
ABB's total delivery to the plant includes 90 UniGear ZS1 panels and other related equipment such as 110 V DC LS systems with batteries. The task also includes plant design, project management, installation, testing and commissioning of the equipment.
- We are pleased to be part of NKT's journey to enable the transition to renewable energy with offshore high-voltage cables. For ABB, the project represents a total commitment, where our long experience in delivering large, complex plants will be of great benefit, says Håkan Morling, Head of Solutions at ABB Distribution Solutions in Sweden.
