President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that the United States is dropping planned tariff increases against a number of European countries, including Denmark, which had opposed the president's desire to buy Greenland. The decision comes in the wake of an agreement on Greenland and the Arctic, which, according to Trump, will strengthen cooperation with NATO and reduce tensions between the parties.

However, the US has already introduced increased tariffs last year. This has led to more tariffs being paid on goods imported from Denmark in the first ten months of 2025 than in the previous nine years combined. This is reported by Dansk Erhverv based on data from the United States International Trade Commission.

According to the analysis, the US has paid a total of 515 million dollars in tariffs on goods from Denmark in the first ten months of 2025. In the whole of 2024, the amount was 56 million dollars. In comparison, from 2016 to 2024 a total of 512 million dollars in tariffs were paid. However, the US Supreme Court is expected to rule soon on whether President Donald Trump had the legal authority to introduce the increased tariffs.

- We have now got figures on what we knew: that the US tariff policy over the past year has been highly distortive of competition and has actually made Danish export companies less competitive in the US market. Our analysis shows that the US importers have had to pay an average of 12.5 percent more for the goods, and such a significant increase in price affects the competitiveness of Danish companies, says Kristian Skriver, senior economist at Dansk Erhverv.

The increased tariffs only apply to goods that physically cross the US border. Services and goods produced locally in the US are not affected. Exports of goods directly from Denmark to the US amounted to DKK 54 billion from January to November 2025, corresponding to almost 16 percent. of total exports to the US market.
