One of Denmark's largest energy storage facilities with a capacity of 90 MWh is now being established at the Port of Hirtshals. The company Green Energy Vault has thus decided to invest in an advanced energy storage facility.
The agreement between Green Energy Vault and the Port of Hirtshals underlines that the port has taken another major and significant step towards becoming Europe's greenest port and a hub for sustainable forms of energy of the future, says the port's director Per Holm Nørgaard in a press release.
- The agreement underlines that we are an attractive partner and that companies can see great advantages in establishing themselves at the Port of Hirtshals. Earlier this year, for example, we entered into an agreement with Norwegian Hydrogen, which will establish a large hydrogen production facility, he says.
Green Energy Vault's total investment in the Port of Hirtshals amounts to a whopping 500 million kroner. DKK. In addition to the investment of DKK 275 million for the facility itself, Green Energy Vault is investing an additional DKK 225 million in ongoing costs over 20 years.
- We are proud to launch this ambitious initiative with the establishment of one of Denmark's largest energy storage facilities of 90 MWh at the Port of Hirtshals. The project is in line with our mission to promote a sustainable future by establishing green power plants that integrate advanced energy storage technologies into the existing electricity infrastructure and support the port's planned expansions, says Tony Breach, CEO of Green Energy Vault.
The new energy storage will lead to significant savings for companies that use large amounts of electricity, while the energy storage contributes to reducing peak loads on the local electricity grid and thus increases the stability of the North Jutland distribution network.
- With this huge investment, we are getting closer to the realization of making the Port of Hirtshals the greenest port in Europe. At the same time, the project helps support our major project to create a Smart Energy System, where surplus energy is recycled in industrial symbioses, at the Port of Hirtshals and the CCUS project Greenport Scandinavia, says CEO Steen Harding Hintze from the development company Greenport North.
Green Energy Vault expects the plant in Hirtshals to be operational in early 2026.
