The government's green flight route is still surrounded by uncertainty

It is not yet permitted to fly with 100 percent green fuel, and this challenges the government's green route.

The government has announced that one green aviation route will be operated in Denmark next year. However, it is still "uncertain" when this will be possible.

This is the assessment of the Danish Transport Authority in a consultation response from July.

One of the significant uncertainty factors is that it is not currently permitted to fly on 100 percent green fuel. Safety regulations state that a maximum of 50 percent green fuel may be mixed in an aircraft tank.

The Authority has investigated whether the international aviation organization ASTM has a new regulation ready for the government's deadline, and it is not clear less than six months before the turn of the year.

- The Danish Transport Authority can conclude on this basis that it is uncertain when the finished standard will be available, and whether it will be possible to fly on 100 percent green fuels as early as the beginning of 2025, the consultation response states.

"We will lead the way"

Even when the government presented its proposal for green aviation in 2023, it had to acknowledge that the plan was not permitted within the current framework. When Tax Minister Jeppe Bruus (S) was asked whether the proposal was realistic when 100 percent green aviation fuel is not permitted, he replied:

- Try listening. We are an absolutely fantastic country - well, we are. We are optimistic, we are an open economy, we are oriented towards the rest of the world. We want to lead the way and show the rest of the world that it can be done.

Since then, the Danish Transport Authority has held regular meetings with the industry and still cannot guarantee when the plan will be permitted.

Furthermore, it has turned out that the production of the green fuels has not yet reached the necessary speed. Over the summer, it has been described how airlines have dropped green targets due to a lack of green fuel.

These factors also lead Transport Minister Thomas Danielsen (V) to admit that there are challenges with the plan.

- Both certification and production of green aviation fuels are challenged, and therefore it also means something that we are now pushing the market with the ambition of a pure green domestic route in 2025, he says in a written response.

- There is no doubt that it is a very ambitious goal, and it must be so if it is to help push development.
