Aalborg Airport announces readiness to host first green flight route

Norwegian and Aalborg Airport will show that they are ready to take to the air with a green domestic route in 2025.

The first green domestic route will take off in 2025, according to the government's foundation. If it is up to Aalborg Airport - the country's third largest - it should very much be the route between Aalborg and Copenhagen. That's what airport director Niels Hemmingsen says.

- I'm fighting hard for Aalborg Airport to have the first green route, because today we have the busiest domestic route - Aalborg-Copenhagen. So all other things being equal, it will have the greatest climate effect, he says.

Norwegian flies on the route between Aalborg and Copenhagen, and here they share the ambition to fly green on the route. As it is now, the planes are only approved to be able to take up to 50 percent fossil-free fuel.

But to prove that they are ready for the green challenge, Norwegian has purchased 140 tons of fossil-free fuel, equivalent to the fuel consumption of 100 flights on the route. The fossil-free fuel, produced from biowaste, will be poured into aircraft tanks in the coming weeks and reduce CO2 emissions by up to 80 percent.

Need for greater production of green fuels

This shows that the infrastructure is already in place to be able to send aircraft with green fuel on the wings, says a statement from CEO of Norwegian Geir Karlsen.

According to the CEO, the limiting factor is the production of the fossil-free fuel, which should be accelerated.

- For this to become a reality in 2025, the availability of fossil-free aviation fuels must be increased significantly. Today, fossil-free aviation fuel is only available in very limited quantities, says Geir Karlsen.

North Jutland forces are also working to establish local production of green aviation fuel, says Niels Hemmingsen. He refers to the fact that there are "a few projects in the pipeline" for green aviation fuel produced using Power-to-X technology.

The green aviation fuel will - seen through the eyes of the airport director - be a game changer when it comes to CO2 emissions. It will also make people have a different view of flying, he predicts.

- There is also a consumer dimension to it. I am convinced that this will help convince people that flying is actually okay, says Niels Hemmingsen.

The government's goal is for all domestic flights to be green by 2030 at the latest. The plan is to introduce an aviation tax of around DKK 100 per passenger, which will, among other things, help finance the green flight route in 2025.
