On Thursday, the European Hydrogen Bank (EHB) awarded a total of approximately 1.09 billion euros in the third auction round to nine projects with a total capacity of almost 1.1 GW of electrolysis capacity. Two Danish projects were among the recipients of the support.

The largest recipient of support was MorGen Energy, whose project Njordkraft in Esbjerg has received a commitment to support of up to 422.75 million euros (approximately 3.15 billion DKK). MorGen Energy is pleased with the support, which the company says helps bring the project closer to a final investment decision.

The commitment is conditional on a final support agreement being concluded, but MorGen Energy highlights it as an important milestone for the project's further development. The first phase of Njordkraft includes 300 MW of electrolysis capacity with the possibility of later expansion to 1 GW. The first phase of the project is working towards an annual production of approximately 45,500 tons of green hydrogen.

- The selection under the European Hydrogen Bank is an important milestone for Njordkraft and reflects the growing momentum in Europe's energy market. The project combines access to competitive renewable energy, strategic infrastructure and proximity to industrial demand centers in Germany and Europe, says Werner Lieberherr, CEO of MorGen Energy.

The company points out that the project is in a strong position with access to renewable energy, upcoming Danish-German hydrogen infrastructure and industrial customers in Germany and the rest of Europe. The Njordkraft project is planned to be connected to the upcoming hydrogen connection between Esbjerg and Heidenau near Hamburg and will supply green hydrogen to industry in Germany and the rest of Europe.

According to MorGen Energy, the next step will now be to continue commercial discussions with potential customers and work towards a final investment decision.

- We thank the European Commission and all parties involved in the design of the European Hydrogen Bank and remain fully committed to our common mission. Our focus is now on advancing commercial discussions with industrial counterparts and taking the project forward towards a final investment decision and implementation, says Werner Lieberherr.

MorGen Energy was founded in 2021 and is Trafigura's dedicated company within green hydrogen. Trafigura is a global commodities and energy group with activities within, among others, oil, gas, metals and energy infrastructure. MorGen Energy was established to develop large-scale hydrogen projects and associated infrastructure with a focus on establishing green hydrogen as a central energy source in Europe's future energy system.
