The mutual understanding between Ukraine and Russia not to attack energy infrastructure in the war has been broken, according to both parties. Both sides are now accusing each other of carrying out such attacks. This is what the German Spiegel writes.
The Russian Defense Ministry says that the Ukrainian military has attacked several targets with drones and Himars missiles. According to the ministry, a gas metering station in the town of Sudja in the Russian Kursk region close to the Ukrainian border was hit, which triggered a heavy fire and destroyed the facility.
Another 19 drones were reportedly shot down over the Saratov region in southern Russia, where Russian officials said they were targeting oil refinery infrastructure. The information could not be independently confirmed.
On the Ukrainian side, state energy company Naftogaz is accusing Russia of another attack on gas production facilities.
“The latest attack is not just an act against our infrastructure, but an attempt to undermine the stability of energy supplies,” said Roman Tschumak, CEO of Naftogaz.
He said there were no reports of injuries and that work to repair the damage was underway. Tschumak did not say what type of weapon was used or where and when the attack took place.
Previously, Ukrainian authorities have reported massive Russian drone strikes, particularly in the Poltava region. This information has also not been independently confirmed.
The United States continues to try to mediate in the conflict, which has lasted for more than three years. A proposal by US President Donald Trump for a 30-day ceasefire without preconditions has been rejected by Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, the two sides have formally agreed to a minimum common basis, which exempts energy infrastructure from military targets.
Yet Ukraine and Russia have repeatedly accused each other of violating this agreement.
– The Russian military has shelled the city of Kherson with artillery and at the same time damaged energy infrastructure in the area,
said Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky during a meeting with partner countries in Paris.
He states that Ukraine will send documentation of the incident to Washington and is awaiting a reaction from the White House.
