“Tudetosset”: Test center for wind turbines at the Wadden Sea National Park

The Danish Nature Conservation Association, former ministers, mayors, party leaders and celebrity TV hosts agree to put their networks into play to stop giant windmills.

The tourists are still there with the sheep, and the Wadden Sea lies peacefully together with a rich birdlife.

- Shouldn't Pernille Vermund see a white-tailed eagle? Sebastian Klein asks the crowd.

Of course the party leader should see the white-tailed eagle.

- There are a triple-digit number of white-tailed eagles here in the Wadden Sea, and it's right here at Kammerslusen, at Ballum and at Vidåslusen. This is exactly where they want to put a test center. It's crazy, says TV host, debater and bird lover Sebastian Klein, perhaps not without hinting that "crazy" is going to become one of the most used words of the day.

The government is in the process of deciding on the location of a new test center for wind turbines. There are eight 450-meter-high turbines, and of the possible locations, three are in and near the Wadden Sea National Park. That is why the Wadden Sea National Park stands shoulder to shoulder with the mayors of Fanø, Frank Jensen (R) and Tønder's Jørgen Popp Petersen (Slesvig Party), party leader Pernille Vermund (NB) and the two former Liberal ministers Ulla Tørnæs and Eva Kjer, and not forgetting Sebastian Klein.

All those present agreed that we must have more renewable energy.

- We must have wind turbines, but they must go offshore. We have solar cells primarily on the roofs of public buildings. And then we must have nuclear power, because the wind does not blow all the time, Pernille Vermund stated.

DN: We must not destroy this gem

The president of the Danish Nature Conservation Association did not interfere either.

- We must not destroy the Wadden Sea to ensure that we get renewable energy. We must not destroy this gem. The government must turn the tables and make new screenings that take nature into account, said Maria Reumert Gjerding.

The view from the dike at Kammerslusen also offers a view of the 200-meter-high turbines in Måde south of Esbjerg and the 250-meter-high chimney of the Esbjerg power plant about 26 km away. But a test center would consist of eight turbines with a height of 450 meters.

- It is just north of Kammerslusen that eight turbines could be located, and they are nine times higher than the cathedral tower in Ribe, concludes chairman of the Wadden Sea National Park Flemming Just and points in the direction of the historical landmark six kilometers away.

Sebastian Klein makes a comparison that will make most people jump.

- In the USA, people have a slightly different view of nature protection. There they closed down a wind farm that killed some eagles.

- It would be a serious mistake for generations if an area here in the Wadden Sea is designated. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, adds Maria Reumert Gjerding.

The mayor of Tønder also sees Denmark's international reputation as being in danger.

- We already have renewable energy and wind turbines in the municipality, but it should not be here. We also need to think about how we are viewed in Germany and the Netherlands, where there is also a Wadden Sea, says Jørgen Popp Petersen.

And in the Liberal Party there is sympathy for placing the test center elsewhere, even though the responsible minister is Minister of Church Affairs Louise Schack Elholm (V), who is also Minister for Rural Areas and Minister for Nordic Cooperation.

- When I heard this, Ulla Tørnæs and I decided that we are determined not to have the test center here in the Wadden Sea. Use your network to stop it, said Eva Kjer.

Pernille Vermund also reached out to the assembly in the fight against the test center, when a listener told about how applications for access to documents about the location came back filled with black underlines.

- Let me know, so I can call the minister in for consultation if you can't get an answer. I'm ready to help. Reach out to the politicians. Money is what decides this. Let's find financing for another location, for example offshore. We would like to be involved, because this is really crazy and stupid, concluded Pernille Vermlund.

DOI.dk is working to get a comment from Minister of Churches Louise Schack Elholm (V) on the criticism and the possible location of a test center in or near the Wadden Sea National Park.
