US President Donald Trump plans to impose tariffs on goods from the EU "very soon", he said on Monday night, according to the AFP news agency. Trump did not elaborate on exactly when he plans to impose the tariffs or the size of them.

Since Trump won the US presidential election in November, he has repeatedly threatened to increase tariffs on foreign goods - including European ones. A few days after his inauguration, Trump said at a press conference at the White House that he believes there is a worrying imbalance in trade between the US and the EU.

- So they will be subject to tariffs. That is the only way to achieve justice, Trump said at the time.

Late Saturday evening, the president made good on his repeated threats to impose tariffs on goods from Mexico, Canada and China in the US. He did so when he signed a presidential decree. The decree introduces a 25 percent tariffs on all goods from Mexico and Canada.

Exports related to energy products from Canada - for example oil - are the only ones exempt from the 25 percent. A tariff of ten percent will apply here instead. At the same time, a ten percent tariff will be imposed on goods from China. The tariff is expected to come into effect from Tuesday, February 4.

Both Canada, Mexico and China have reacted to Trump's tariffs. Canada has announced that it will introduce tariffs of 25 percent on American goods, while Mexico has also announced tariffs on goods from the United States. China says it intends to come up with "an appropriate response" to the United States' decision to impose tariffs.

Donald Trump will meet with representatives of Canada and Mexico on Monday to discuss the newly introduced tariffs. The president said this on Monday night, according to AFP.

An unnamed spokesman for the European Commission told AFP on Sunday that the EU will "react decisively against any trading partner that unfairly or arbitrarily imposes tariffs on EU goods".
