Social sustainability is of great importance to many young people in the Danish labor market. 57 percent of 18-35-year-olds in a new survey respond that it is very or somewhat important to them that their workplace works with diversity, representation and inclusion. This is stated by the Danish Industry Foundation in a press release.

The survey was prepared by the think tank EQUALIS and is based on responses from 2,001 young people and 1,002 managers in the private sector. Young women in particular attach importance to the workplace having a focus on social sustainability.

- A great many young people expect a focus on diversity, equality and inclusion when they go to work. This places demands on employers, who need to give social sustainability a concrete and continuous focus if they want to recruit and retain young talent, says Gine Maltha Kampmann, CEO of the think tank EQUALIS.

A key finding from the report is that flexibility plays a major role. Three out of four young people associate flexibility with an inclusive workplace, and almost 9 out of 10 believe it is important that their manager gives them responsibility and freedom to solve tasks in their own way. At the same time, they demand clear frameworks and personal guidance.

- Young people want to be heard and included in advice. But they also express a need for clear frameworks, personal guidance and a mutual alignment of expectations between them and their manager. It is a paradox that demands a lot from employers, says Gine Maltha Kampmann.

The Danish Industry Foundation also sees a need to better equip smaller companies in particular for the task.

- Danish small and medium-sized companies must have access to knowledge and tools that can support the work of creating modern and diverse workplaces that retain and attract talent. We want to make this work easier and put more focus on it with the analysis, says Charlotte Kjeldsen Krarup, Development Director at the Danish Industry Foundation.

In addition to the questionnaire surveys, the analysis is based on interviews with both managers and young employees as well as input from a youth panel and a follow-up group with representatives from the Confederation of Danish Industry and the Confederation of Danish Enterprise. It concludes with a catalogue of actions with specific recommendations for companies. The analysis can be read here.
