Employees with a hard physical working environment have twice the risk of leaving the labor market before the age of retirement compared to others. This is shown by a new analysis from the Danish Labor Movement Business Council.
- If you have a hard physical working environment, there is a significantly increased probability that you will have to retire early from the labor market. In fact, the risk is twice as high, says Kristoffer Lind Glavind, senior analyst at the Danish Labor Movement Business Council.
The analysis shows that 21.4 percent of 50-60-year-old employees with a hard physical working environment in 2018 had retired from the labor market on either early retirement, early retirement, senior pension or early retirement in 2023. In comparison, only 9.9 percent of those without a hard physical work environment.
To be categorized as having a hard physical work environment, the employee must both be exposed to physical stress and experience concrete discomfort such as pain and exhaustion after work.
– When we talk about having a hard physical work environment, it is not for fun. It is a very restrictive definition. Our analysis shows that hard work is associated with burnout. Therefore, good schemes are needed that can give employees who need it a dignified retirement. Above all, there is of course a need to eliminate poor working conditions, says Kristoffer Lind Glavind.
The analysis is based on data from Statistics Denmark and the National Research Center for the Working Environment as well as the study "Working Environment and Health 2018".
