With the green transition and increased digitalization, Denmark will lack 13,000 educated candidates in the fields of engineering, technology and IT in 2030. In addition, there is a shortage of 7,000 people with a medium-term technical or IT education, according to calculations made for IDA.
Therefore, the trade union is very pleased with the latest statement of quota 2 applications for higher education for 2023 from the Ministry of Education and Research, which was due for submission yesterday.
The statement shows a significant increase in interest in studying to be an engineer. Compared to 2022, the application for the Bachelor of Engineering program has increased by 12 percent, and is thus around the same level as previous years, and within the natural sciences the increase is 5 percent compared to 2022.
Interest in the civil engineering program has increased by a whopping 32 percent from last year, and is thus the absolute high jumper in the ministry's report.
- It's fantastic that more young people are applying for technical and natural science programs via quota 2. This is an expression of the fact that many are interested in studying engineering, among other things. The extraordinarily high application for the civil engineering program can of course also be due to the fact that many would like to have a two-year master's program before the programs are halved by political parties, says Aske Nydam Guldberg, acting chairman of the Danish Association of Engineers.
However, the acting chairman of IDA emphasizes that the large number of applicants via quota 2 can only be seen as a hint.
- It is only when we see the final search with both quota 1 and quota 2, and not least how the final intake will be, that we can really start to rejoice, he says.
DI shares the excitement
At the Confederation of Danish Industry, there is also great joy that the search for the engineering study appears to be reaching new heights.
- It is excellent reading. The quota 2 search looks unusually good for the engineering programs. We are very happy about that. For several years, the technical and natural science fields have been the programs that the business community demands the most. But also the child of pain, because many more candidates are needed. Now we are crossing our fingers that we also see an increase in admissions this summer, especially in those areas, says Deputy Director for Higher Education at DI Mikkel Haarder.
This year's application for higher education through quota 2 was published yesterday. The figures show that almost 52,000 have applied. This is almost on par with 2019, i.e. before the corona pandemic hit.
