According to the European Commission, Trump has created a sense of urgency for a plan for the steel and metals sector.
- The international geopolitical situation and the specific day we are experiencing today, which Trump has decided to call "liberation day", all create a sense of urgency.
This is what European Commission Executive Vice-President Stéphane Séjourné said in a speech to the European Parliament in Strasbourg.
The Parliament will discuss the future of the European metals and steel sector today. Séjourné believes that "it is almost a last resort" for the metals and steel sector. According to Stéphane Séjourné, the industry needs an action plan that covers all parameters of competitiveness and a business plan.
US President Donald Trump is expected to present his plan to impose tariffs on foreign goods on Tuesday evening. He has previously warned that the EU will be hit by a tariff of 25 percent. on cars exported to the US, as well as steel and aluminium. The president has, as Séjourné alludes to, chosen to call April 2 "Liberation Day".
Donald Trump has said that his tariff policy is about strengthening production internally in the US. At the same time, he will respond to other countries' tariffs on American goods. According to Stéphane Séjourné, the EU must now protect the European steel industry.
The Commission has introduced a 15 percent cap on Europe's imports of foreign steel. This is intended to help protect European steel production against cheaper steel from abroad.
- We have crazy competition from China and the Middle East. We have overproduction worldwide. All of this requires the EU to find targeted, ambitious support options, says Séjourné.
The President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, said in a speech to the European Parliament on Tuesday that the Commission intends to respond to the US's plans for tariffs.
- We are open to negotiations, but we have a strong plan for a response if necessary, she said.
She stressed that the next steps for the Commission must be discussed with other EU leaders.
