CEO denies harbor rumors about M.A.R.S. :
"We have never promised or said 1000 jobs"

Before the recycling company opened at Frederikshavn Port, there was talk of 1,000 good jobs, but today M.A.R.S. employs approximately 160 employees – in addition to between 50 and 70 from subcontractors.

Kim Thygesen is, in addition to being CEO of Modern American Recycling Services, Europe A/S (M.A.R.S.) at the port of Frederikshavn, also a very experienced man in the port world. His years at Blue Water mean that he still has his finger on the pulse, and he knows from his network what is being said about his current company. And that is something that he himself expresses to DOI.dk during an interview.

- We will expand, but it will not mean more than 250 employees. I have never said that with the 1000 employees, and we have never promised or said 1000 jobs at M.A.R.S., says Kim Thygesen, who does not dare to let oil ships and rigs be scrapped in multi-shift shifts that would provide more employees:

- On board the ships, I do not dare to let employees work in the evening and at night for safety reasons.

Today, there are 160 employees directly employed by M.A.R.S., in addition to a changing number of between 50 and 70 employees from subcontractors. However, Kim Thygesen is also working on opening another branch of M.A.R.S. in the Brazilian city of Porto Central.

What does M.A.R.S. pay? in rent?

Another port rumor that is almost on crutches is also addressed by the CEO himself. The financial situation of the Port of Frederikshavn, with a debt of around 1.7 billion, means that there is interest in how much the company actually pays in rent to the struggling port. Although Kim Thygesen cannot give details about the conditions, there is something he would like to confirm.

- I think we are one of the companies here in the port that pays the most, and it is a double-digit million amount, says Kim Thygesen.

There is another thing that he would also like to tell you about. The rumor mill wants to know that M.A.R.S. drives the scrapped steel for recycling out of the port by truck at night to avoid paying money to the port. This is also something that he can reject.

- We pay the same port fee to the port as if we had sailed it out, explains Kim Thygesen and elaborates on why the steel is taken to Grenaa, where it is shipped, for example, to Turkey:

- There is a lack of infrastructure here to be able to ship it out from here. A 200-meter quay is needed, and then a crane is also needed to load it.

In Grenaa, the steel is sailed out in the larger ships that can take 30,000 tons once a month. That option is not currently available in the Port of Frederikshavn.

- At least 10,000 tons are needed, but again, it has to be profitable, explains Kim Thygesen about a problem with the port's infrastructure that cannot be solved right away.
