Denmark's two underground gas storage facilities in Stenlille and Lille Torup are only 33 percent full, although the EU has set a target of 60 percent by July 1 and an overall target of 90 percent filling by November 1.
Therefore, there is a need to fill the Danish storage facilities. In order to achieve this target, the Danish Energy Agency has asked Gas Storage Denmark to launch a tender that will help increase the amount of gas in storage before winter sets in.
The tender is expected to be completed in September and will enable gas traders to commit to storing a given amount of gas in Denmark for a fee. The agreements are intended to ensure that sufficient gas is available in the event of cold periods or interruptions in supply.
- The supply situation is generally good. But Denmark is some way from the EU target we need to reach, and therefore we have an obligation to act. There is gas on the market, and the supply should contribute to more of that gas being placed in Danish storage. This will contribute to security of supply over the winter, says Peter Christian Baggesgaard Hansen, Deputy Director General of the Danish Energy Agency.
Although Denmark's own gas production in the North Sea exceeds annual consumption, and biogas in 2024 covered 38 percent of total consumption, storage still plays a central role in the robustness of gas supply. Denmark also has access to gas via the Baltic Pipe from Norway and is well connected to neighboring countries, which also contributes to overall security of supply. However, increased storage should ensure that Denmark can withstand fluctuations in supply and keep warm during the winter months.
