Venezuela will hand over between 30 and 50 million barrels of sanctioned oil to the United States. This is what US President Donald Trump wrote on Wednesday night in a post on his own social media, Truth Social.

- The oil will be sold at market price, and I will control the money to ensure that it is used for the benefit of the people of Venezuela and the United States, he writes.

He adds that he has put US Secretary of Energy, Chris Wright, in charge of implementing the transfer immediately.

- It (the oil, ed.) will be transported by tankers and brought directly to ports in the United States, the president writes.

On Saturday, US forces attacked Venezuela in several places and arrested the country's now deposed president, Nicolas Maduro, and his wife at their home in the Venezuelan capital, Caracas.

Large oil reserves

Subsequently, Trump said that Venezuela's oil reserves should no longer be controlled by the Venezuelans themselves, but should be taken over by the United States.

Venezuela's oil reserves are the world's largest, and the country holds about a fifth of the world's total reserves. However, the country only extracts 0.8 percent of the oil extracted globally.

This is due, among other things, to the fact that successive governments have neglected the maintenance of the infrastructure surrounding the oil industry, and that the industry has lacked international investment and has been hit by foreign sanctions.

Trump said on Tuesday that he believes that American oil companies will be able to get large-scale oil extraction up and running in Venezuela within less than a year and a half. He also acknowledged that it will be expensive for the companies to enter the Venezuelan oil industry.

Trump and several of his ministers are to meet with oil company executives at the White House on Friday to discuss plans for them to enter Venezuela and drill for oil. Four unnamed people with knowledge of the meeting told Politico on Tuesday.

The people did not disclose which oil companies are participating in the meeting.
