Electricity consumption in the Triangle area reached new heights in January 2026. Private households and small businesses recorded a total consumption of 81.5 million kWh, which is the highest monthly measurement ever, while total electricity consumption in the area increased to 206.5 million kWh. This was reported by TREFOR in a press release.
Compared to January 2025, electricity consumption by private households and small businesses increased by 19 percent, and during the month the previous daily record was broken 21 times. The highest daily measurement was recorded on January 29, when consumption reached 2.83 million kWh. The previous record dates from November 2025. According to TREFOR El-net, there are several explanations for the significant increase in electricity consumption.
- This is a significant increase in consumption in one month. The combination of, among other things, cold winter weather, an increasing number of electrically heated homes and more electric cars means that our grid is in use like never before. The records also show a development in the electrification of society that we as an electricity grid company must be ready to handle, says Christopher Damgaard-Carstensen, business specialist at TREFOR El-net.
The high consumption also means that previous record months have now moved down the list of the most electricity-intensive months in the Triangle area:
