January 2026 was the most electricity-intensive month ever for private electricity customers in Cerius-Radius' supply area, which covers Greater Copenhagen, North Zealand, the rest of Zealand as well as Lolland-Falster and Møn. In total, private customers used 800 million kilowatt hours, which is 16.5 percent more than in the same month last year. This is stated by Cerius-Radius in a press release.
The grid company has around 2.1 million electricity customers and points to the cold winter weather as a significant reason for the increased consumption. At the same time, increasing electrification, including more electric cars and heat pumps, contributes to a higher total electricity consumption in the cold months.
- The frosty days cause electricity consumption on residential roads to increase dramatically. Because even though there are still many gas boilers, and the rollout of district heating is gaining momentum, there are also many who are turning up their electric radiators or have invested in heat pumps. At the same time, we have reached half a million electric cars in Denmark, and they are also helping to raise total consumption to this unprecedented level, says Cäthe Bay-Smidt, CEO of Cerius-Radius.
In addition to record-high monthly consumption, Cerius-Radius also registered significantly higher load on the electricity grid during January. In total, the previous daily record for private customers' electricity consumption from 2024 was surpassed on 11 different days during the month.
