The rollout of green energy in the Netherlands is underway, and this creates a need for increased capacity in the Dutch electricity grid. Danish NKT is now profiting from this. The cable manufacturer has entered into an eight-year framework agreement with the Dutch utility company Enexis for the supply of medium-voltage cables. This is stated by NKT in a press release.
- We are proud to be a key supplier. We have a long history with Enexis and have supplied medium-voltage cables for many projects over the years. We look forward to further strengthening our cooperation with this framework agreement, which supports their work to upgrade the Dutch electricity grid, including connecting more renewable energy projects, says Carlos Fernandez, EVP Applications at NKT.
In 2023, 48 percent of the Netherlands' electricity was generated from renewable sources such as solar, wind and water. The amount of electricity produced from wind energy in 2023 increased by 35 percent compared to the previous year, while solar energy increased by 24 percent. This growth is expected to continue, and more distribution cables are needed to connect the projects to the electricity grid. Some of these will be supplied by NKT under the agreement.
Specifically, it is expected that NKT will supply approximately 600 km per year over the next eight years. The framework agreement also includes an option to extend for a further four years.
- We are pleased that NKT will be the supplier for our expansion in the coming years. We want to guarantee the supply of the necessary cables in line with the increasing volumes, and that is why we are scaling up the number of cable suppliers. For the Enexis service area alone, we need a total cable length that can take us around the world twice. We are really talking about staggering amounts of cables. We look forward to our future collaboration, says Rutger van der Leeuw, CEO of Enexis.
The majority of the cables under the agreement with Enexis will be produced at NKT's factory in Asnæs. NKT will start delivering medium voltage cables under the agreement from mid-2025.
