As one of Europe's largest exporters of electricity, the upgrade of the French electricity grid is crucial for the supply of electricity to the entire continent. That is why the French grid operator, RTE, has awarded NKT the extension of two framework agreements for the supply of high-voltage cable solutions from 2026 to 2028.

The framework agreements, the value of which NKT does not disclose, cover 90 kV, 225 kV and 400 kV land cables as well as accessories and installation and contain contractual obligations for the supply of approximately 1,400 km of cable solutions. These will be supported from NKT's factories in Esposende, Portugal and in Cologne, Germany. Esposende became part of the company in June 2024, when NKT acquired the Portuguese cable company SolidAl, NKT said in a press release.

- We are pleased to continue the long-term collaboration with RTE as they renew and strengthen France's electricity grid and support the transition to renewable energy. We have been working with RTE since 2011 and in 2023 we were awarded the Biscay Gulf Interconnector between Spain and France. With the acquisition of SolidAl, we have improved our geographical reach across new and existing markets, says Clas Westerlind, CEO of NTK.

The collaboration makes NKT an important part of RTE’s strategy to adapt to climate change, renew and develop the electricity grid to accommodate more electricity generated from renewable energy, and support France’s transition to net-zero emissions.

- This partnership with NKT not only allows us to secure the equipment needed to support the energy transition. It also demonstrates the impact that investments in moving away from fossil fuels can have on the French and European manufacturing industry, driving economic growth and employment, says Xavier Piechaczyk, Chairman of the Board of Directors of RTE.
