A ship from the Russian shadow fleet is circling in an area of the Baltic Sea where a cable carries gas from Norway to Poland, an unnamed source from the Polish Foreign Ministry told Polish television station TVP World.

Poland cannot officially confirm the information. Foreign Ministry spokesman Pawel Wronski told Reuters that he had no information that a ship was above the gas cable.

The Polish gas distributor Gaz-System told Reuters that the gas cable was functioning normally.

There is currently a lot of attention being paid to ships moving around the Baltic Sea and showing suspicious behavior. As recently as December, underwater power and data cables were damaged.

The NATO defense alliance has decided to increase its presence in the Baltic Sea by two ships as a result of several cable breaks over Christmas. On Tuesday, eight NATO countries around the Baltic Sea met in Helsinki to discuss sabotage of undersea cables.

In addition to Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Sweden and Germany participated in the meeting.

- NATO will not accept it. Possible attacks on our infrastructure will have consequences, said NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte after the meeting.

Finland's President, Alexander Stubb, acknowledges that critical infrastructure must also be expanded and the ability to carry out rapid repairs after an attack must be strengthened.

- We cannot prevent all acts of sabotage. Therefore, it is very important to have different energy sources and data cables that can be used in the event of an attack. The three most recent attacks have not led to any consequences for the public. That is because we have alternatives, says Alexander Stubb.
