Investing in renewables is a hot topic. GreenLab's CFO, Anette Vestergaard Christensen, knows this all too well, because it was only two years ago that she last stood on stage and spoke about the topic. She will do so again this year at the GreenLab Summit 2023, so the topic is in high demand.
- Everyone is interested in financing now, but at the same time it is almost impossible to predict the costs. This again means that it is difficult to obtain bank financing. When guarantees are required again, the costs increase once again, explains Anette Vestergaard Christensen, about something she calls a paradox in the middle of a time when there is a need for scaling in the area.
Also on stage is former CEO of PKA and current chairman of the board Peter Damgaard Jensen, and he has a historical example of how it can sometimes turn out to be a very good business.
- Anholt Offshore Wind Farm was a really good investment for PKA Pension. It was because no one else was willing to bid for the park at that time, says Peter Damgaard Jensen about the offshore park, which was completed in 2013 and thus just turned ten years old on September 4.
He also knows that the time window for success or failure can be small.
- Only three years after Anholt was opened, everyone wanted to invest in offshore wind, he explains about the shift from first mover to mainstream.
But there are ups and downs in the investment market.
- There is a bit of turbulence in the market right now, but when you are that old you know that is how it is, concludes 69-year-old Peter Damgaard Jensen.
The danger lurking
There are investors waiting to put money into play.
- There is a lot of money waiting to be invested, says Peter Damgaard Jensen, who also has a warning:
- I want to put a little wormwood in the cup. If there are higher returns on investments in the USA, then investors will move there if the opportunities do not come here, warns Peter Damgaard Jensen.
And there is a little more wormwood from Anette Vestergaard Christensen at the end.
- I must admit, I am not that optimistic, because many business cases really do not look good. But we still have to be forward-looking with our investments, she says.
