The French government has lowered its target for offshore wind in 2035 from 18 GW to 15 GW in favor of nuclear power. This is according to the new PPE3 energy plan, which sets out the energy strategy for 2026-2035 on the path to climate neutrality by 2050, Renews. Although PPE3 continues the expansion of offshore wind in France, the target is lower than the original 18 GW set in the plan.
For onshore wind, the target is 31 GW in 2030 and 35-40 GW in 2035, compared to around 24 GW in 2025, with a focus on repowering existing parks. At the same time, six EPR2 reactors are planned from 2038, with the possibility of eight more, the extension of the life of 57 reactors and a production of 380 TWh from 2030.
Hydropower is being strengthened with an increase in dam capacity of 2.8 GW, including an additional 640 MW on existing concessions. Work on PPE3 began in 2022, but its publication has been delayed due to political unrest in France in recent months, including the resignation of prime ministers and growing opposition to renewable energy from right-wing parties.
