Energinet to build almost 3000 km of new electricity grid by 2030

Energinet's Long-Term Development Plan 2024 has been published after a consultation. 34 responses have been submitted, which have been assessed and incorporated into the long-term development plan, which contains plans for thousands of new electricity connections.

Towards 2030, Energinet is to build 2700 km more electricity grid by 2030, and in the following decades the state-owned company is to build a further 3000-4000 km. During the same period, 1000-2000 km of overhead lines will be dismantled as the connections reach their end of life and must be replaced by other connections.

This is shown in Energinet's Long-Term Development Plan 2024, which has just been published after the consultation period.

- The main message in the long-term development plan is that there will be a need for much more electricity grid – both overhead lines and buried high-voltage cables. The plan and the lines on the map are our best bet when we look into the future, but the only thing we can say for sure is that the world in 15 or 25 years will not look quite the way we imagine it today, says Bjarne Brendstrup, area manager for grid development at Energinet.

Especially after 2030, it is impossible to say exactly “where”, “how much” and “when”, he explains. New offshore wind farms or solar farms that we do not know about today, and the location of future large consumers of electricity may mean that new needs arise, or that connections will not be quite as strong or stronger than initially assumed. But the plan shows that the need to transport more energy around the country and between parts of the country.

Will cause inconvenience

34 different organizations and authorities have submitted consultation responses, which have been assessed and incorporated into the long-term development plan.

Bjarne Brendstrup points out that the consultation responses repeatedly point in opposite directions. For example, some want new electricity producers and consumers to be placed in places in the electricity grid so that the existing electricity grid is utilized as much as possible and the need for expansions is minimized. Others point out that with that logic, development will occur in those places in the country where there is already the possibility of building new, green electricity plants, and that the electricity grid must therefore be expanded to a greater extent so that development can occur throughout the country. For example, 15 mayors and regional council chairmen from North Jutland want more electricity grids north of the Limfjord.

Expansion of the high-voltage grid will often cause inconvenience to the citizens and local communities that are affected. Energinet is trying to accommodate this by informing and engaging in dialogue about the best solutions in good time, and even if there is compensation for the landowners and neighbors who will have the plants close by.

- Therefore, we are naturally very aware that we must ensure that the expansion of the electricity grid is done as gently as possible - and that we do not build more than is absolutely necessary, says Bjarne Brendstrup.
