A united blue opposition will convene a debate on the issue with a text for adoption stating that the ban on nuclear power should be lifted. This is happening after the two government parties, the Moderates and the Liberals, announced their readiness to do so over the weekend.

- We want to strike while the iron is hot and get over the hump now, says the Liberal Alliance's climate spokesman, Steffen Frølund.

The Liberal Alliance, the Danish Democrats, the Danish People's Party and the Conservatives are behind the proposal.

Nuclear power has been a forbidden territory in Denmark for 40 years. In 1985, the Folketing decided that the technology should not be included in Danish energy planning. This happened against a backdrop of fears of radioactive disasters and major public protests.

Since then, the debate has developed significantly and today is largely about profitability. The discussion is about whether it is too expensive, slow and incompatible with Denmark's energy system. Several parties will now have thoroughly investigated this in a separate commission.

- We need to have thought it all through and highlighted all societal considerations before we can draw two lines and say whether it makes sense or not, says Steffen Frølund.

In the Conservatives, we want to have wind in all sails that can create a climate-neutral society.

- I feel that we have to open up to all technologies that bring us to the goal of securing the massive amount of green electricity we need, says party chairwoman Mona Juul.

She acknowledges that nuclear power will be a very lengthy process before green electricity is ultimately produced.

While the Moderates and the Liberals have now declared their agreement, there is still skepticism from the Social Democrats, who emphasize that the Danish electricity system has the best conditions with wind and solar energy.

The Radicals also disagree in the blue parties' appeal. From here it is referred to that nuclear power will take a long time and be expensive - and that it also does not fit into the plans that have been made for the Danish energy transition.

- Nuclear power is a good and green source of energy, and we have no ideological opposition to nuclear power. But it simply does not make sense. It is not particularly sensible to introduce nuclear power into Danish energy planning, where we are world champions in wind and solar energy, says climate spokesperson Samira Nawa.
