The 69-year-old German priest and climate activist Jörg Alt has been released after 25 days in prison in the southern German state of Bavaria. He had refused to pay a fine of 500 euros (approximately DKK 3,700) for participating in a climate protest with the Letzte Generation movement and chose instead to serve his sentence in a prison in Nuremberg. This is reported by the Süddeutsche Zeitung.

- The 25 days behind bars were in a way relaxing because during that period I was not exposed to threats, hatred or insults, says Jörg Alt, a priest in Germany.

Letzte Generation is a German climate group that protests against fossil fuels and insufficient political action in relation to the climate crisis through civil disobedience. The movement is known for blocking roads and public buildings in an attempt to get the government to present a concrete plan to phase out oil, gas and coal.

Alt says that he was well received by both fellow prisoners and prison staff, and he believes that many of the inmates should have received psychiatric or social help rather than prison sentences. He received several hundred encouraging letters from five different countries and expresses gratitude for the support.

According to Alt, his stay in prison cost 192 euros (approx. 1,430 DKK) per day, which amounts to a total of 4,800 euros (approx. 35,800 DKK) for the entire period. 4,925 euros (approx. 36,700 DKK) have been collected to cover the amount, and excess funds will be donated to a legal aid fund for climate activists affiliated with Letzte Generation.
