The EU Parliament's trade committee voted on Thursday in favor of legislation that is crucial to the customs agreement that was concluded last year between the EU and the US. This is reported by the news agency Reuters.

This means that the agreement can go to the entire EU Parliament before it also has to be approved by the individual countries. A vote in the EU Parliament could potentially take place next week, writes the news agency Bloomberg.

The agreement, which was concluded with the US in the summer of 2025, has been in the committee for several months. Among other things, it involves imposing a tariff ceiling of 15 percent on many EU goods to the US and, according to the EU, was an attempt to create "predictability and stability" after US President Donald Trump shook up global trade with increased tariffs in the spring of 2025.

However, since then, both the trade and political relationship between the EU and the US has been far from stable. During January, tensions in the trade area between the EU and the US increased considerably due to the situation surrounding Greenland.

And in February, the US Supreme Court ruled that Trump had not had the authority to introduce the global tariffs. This created uncertainty about the US course again.

Among other things, the chairman of the trade committee, Bernd Lange, believed that Trump had created uncertainty about the original agreement with his many different tariff announcements.
