The SVM government's new climate program, which was presented on Friday, shows that Denmark has come further from reaching its first climate goal in 2025.
This disappoints the Council for Green Transition, which is an independent environmental organization. It is not only the lack of progress that disappoints. The organization is also not satisfied with the new climate program content.
- Unfortunately, the climate program does not deliver new action. It is quite disappointing, because we still need to cut between 5-8 million tons of CO2e in 2030. It has not yet been demonstrated that the government can achieve the goals of the Climate Act. There is a lot of talk about taking climate action, but in the hard areas the government is still delivering far too little, says Bjarke Møller, director of the Council for Green Transition, in a press release.
Concerned about confidence in CCS
According to the Council for Green Transition, the government's climate program indirectly acknowledges that CO2 capture (CCS) is an "immature technology". Officials have begun to count on alternative technologies in the event that "the plan for CCS fails," the climate program states.
- The government is investing over 38 billion DKK in an immature and expensive technology such as CO2 capture (CCS), and it is hoped that it can remove over 3 million tons by 2030, but that is far from certain. It is strange that the government is still focusing so heavily on CCS, because the international experience to date is far too poor. The technology does not meet the Climate Act's requirement to choose the most cost-effective solutions, and it will also increase energy consumption at the plants, says Bjarke Møller.
Therefore, the Council for Green Transition hopes that the upcoming CCS tenders will be pushed to the side.
- In the Council for Green Transition, we recommend that the next few years' planned tenders for CO2 capture and storage be postponed to 2030, and instead invest much more in energy efficiency, electrification and boosting the installation of solar and wind energy. In this way, over 5 million can be saved. tons of CO2 in 2030, and it will be much cheaper from a socio-economic perspective, says Bjarke Møller
