Project Greensand: EU's first CO2 ship to be named and launched in mid-May

The EU's first ship for transporting CO2 is now assembled and ready for launch in the Netherlands.

The CO2 storage project Project Greensand's dedicated CO2 ship is soon ready for bidding. It will be christened and launched on May 14. The ship is the first of its kind manufactured in the EU and will play a central role in establishing the project, which is Europe's first full-scale value chain for the capture, transport and storage of CO2, Project Greensand reports.

The ship was assembled at the Royal Niestern Sander shipyard in the northern Netherlands and is a cornerstone of Greensand's ambitions for CO2 storage in the Danish part of the North Sea. It will sail between Esbjerg and the Nini field, where the CO2 will be pumped approximately 1,800 meters into the subsoil, which has previously contained oil and gas and is considered suitable for permanent storage.

- The completion of all sections of the CO2 ship is a major step forward for the transport and storage of CO2 in the EU. The ship is essential for our ambition to establish the first full-scale CO2 storage facility in the EU. The ship is ready for the next construction phase and Greensand is moving closer to completing the EU's first full CCS value chain, says Mads Gade, CEO of INEOS Energy Europe.

The ship is specially designed to meet high safety and environmental requirements, including equipment for cooling and pressure handling. Following the assembly, construction will now enter phase two with retrofitting and testing.

INEOS and its partners – Harbour Energy and Nordsøfonden – made a final investment decision for full-scale CO2 storage in December 2024. The first phase will store 400,000 tonnes of CO2 annually, with the target being 8 million tonnes by 2030. Greensand is expected to begin storage in late 2025 or early 2026.
