Nordhavn Power Solutions in Randers works with ship engines and generators. This also includes the future green methanol solutions that are on the way in shipping. The approximately forty employees with technical educations are the type of employees that are in demand right now. This is something that CEO and CTO Søren Rasmussen is aware of.
- It is as certain as amen in church that when our service technicians work out in shipyards, they will get an offer, says Søren Rasmussen.
However, the director had an idea for how other job offers were not so exciting.
- We wanted it to be even more fun to be at work. So we started with the idea of doing a kind of extended workplace assessment APV, says Søren Rasmussen.
He sat down with an external consultant and developed a workshop that the employees participated in on a Saturday. You might think that in a male-dominated world there would be no room for emotions.
- Blacksmiths and ship fitters are completely ordinary people, and emotions came to the table. We really focused on well-being, says Søren Rasmussen, who gives an example:
- If some employees have to work overtime, while others can go home in the evening. Then it can be really boring when the others just slip away.
One of the eight commandments is: Have you helped your colleague today?
- Even if a colleague is on his way home, it helps a lot with job satisfaction when you are asked with a smile, explains Søren Rasmussen.
A small irritation was also eliminated along the way.
- Some people didn't like the taste of our coffee. For some, it became very filling. I said: Then come and say it, says Søren Rasmussen, who has provided a different coffee for his employees since the workshop.
More communication and measurable well-being
Since the workshop was held, a well-being group has been created.
- We have meetings every 14 days in the well-being group, where two hourly employees, two salaried employees and me sit, says the director.
But a stand has also been introduced where you can press whether you have had a good working day.
- We also have an app where you can tell how the working day has been and make a comment. It is a huge help for me to have a feel for what the atmosphere is like. We have service technicians around the world, and the app helps when we have a technician on a ship in Mexico. Even though I already have close contact with our service technicians, says Søren Rasmussen.
Morning meetings and padel tennis
In addition to the app or stand to tell how their working day has gone, other measures have also been introduced.
- We start our working day by spending ten minutes having a cup of coffee together and just hearing how things are going, says Søren Rasmussen.
A suggestion box has also been set up, and one idea has already been put into practice.
- There is a padel tennis court right next to us. So of course they should be allowed to take a break and play padel tennis, he says about something that is also used after working hours.
The eight tips for better well-being are even with the employees when they are working elsewhere in the world.
- The tips are on our thermo mugs and on the back of our service vehicles. We want to focus on well-being and care for our employees, assures Søren Rasmussen.
Here are Nordhavn Power Solutions' eight tips for creating more job satisfaction:
1. Smile so that it is contagious.
2. Have you helped your colleague today?
3. It is difficult to be angry with someone who is happy.
4. We talk to each other, not about each other.
5. Have the courage to stop the rumor
6. Have you praised your colleague today?
7. There is room for differences.
8. It's okay to speak up.
