Green Power Denmark on climate program: Short-term gains must not prevent greater long-term gains

Green Power Denmark praises the government for focusing on speed in its climate program. But focusing on a 70 percent reduction must not lead to tunnel vision.

The government has launched its annual climate program, and here there is, among other things, a focus on the expansion of green energy on land.

Green Power Denmark praises the government for focusing on speed in its climate program. There is a need for quick decisions on, among other things, the expansion of renewable energy and hydrogen infrastructure if satisfactory results are to be achieved, says the business organization.

- The companies are at the starting line - ready to build wind turbines and solar cells. But we see green projects that have been in the works for 7-10 years. That says it all. We don't need more declarations and ambitions. We need less bureaucracy and faster case processing, says Kristian Jensen and continues:

- I look forward to us at sea getting started with the state tender, which sets the right direction by, for example, including sustainability requirements. But it is important that we have a debate going forward about how much the state should earn from offshore wind turbines. It will be a serious threat to our domestic wind industry if tenders are solely decided by how much money the developers are willing to pay to the treasury, says Kristian Jensen.

Warns against tunnel vision

Green Power Denmark is pleased that the government is focusing on expanding the electricity grid that will transport the large amounts of electricity from wind turbines and solar cells to consumers.

With financing for hydrogen infrastructure on the program, further steps will also be taken in the autumn towards developing green fuels for aircraft, ships and trucks, which for the most part do not count towards the national climate target.

- Our national climate target of 70 percent CO2 reduction by 2030 has created a completely necessary pressure on all parts of society. It has been a game changer, which has meant that the Folketinget has made major and decisive decisions, says Kristian Jensen and adds:

- But we must be careful that our focus on a 70 percent reduction does not give us tunnel vision by making short-term decisions that prevent greater gains in the long term.

Specifically, Green Power Denmark calls on the government to set international climate goals. This could include targets for the production of green fuels in 2030 and a goal to increase the contribution to other countries' CO2 reductions through the export of energy technology and services by at least 35 percent in 2030 compared to 2022.
