The plan was for a commission to look into the power of Minister of Public Safety Torsten Schack Pedersen (V) to secure Denmark, but it will not come to fruition anyway.
This is stated in a press release from the Ministry of Public Safety and Public Emergency.
Instead, the minister will set up an expert panel that can advise the government.
Time is not ripe for a commission, it says.
- The risk picture and the security policy situation mean that the work on strengthened public safety is being accelerated and organized more flexibly. The authorities are already fully engaged in this work, but extra speed must be given. The time is therefore not right for a commission in the traditional sense, says the minister in the press release.
Uncertainty about legal authority
The Ministry of Community Safety and Emergency Preparedness was born with a significant uncertainty, as it is not entirely clear whether it has the legal authority to demand or simply recommend something, when and if it is to order others to strengthen their preparedness.
Torsten Schack Pedersen has previously criticized the uncertainty, and that the subject should be investigated by a commission.
- In so many areas, we are no stronger than the weakest link in the chain. And if we know there is a weak link in the chain, then we must be sure that we can do something about it, said the minister in November last year, after Danish Emergency Services, among others, had stated that it was urgent to get it in place.
For the minister, it is important to involve experts in the emergency response field. This is where the expert panel comes in.
- It allows us to move faster in the areas that really require it, says the minister.
Who will sit on the panel, and the details of what the panel can and must do, are not yet known.
Place in security committee
Earlier this week it emerged that Torsten Schack Pedersen has nevertheless been given a place on the government's central security committee.
This was apparent from the Prime Minister's list of members of the government's most central committees.
When Torsten Schack Pedersen was appointed minister six months ago, it caused a stir that he had not been given a place on the committee, as he is Minister for Security in Denmark.
Torsten Schack Pedersen is not replacing anyone on the committee. But he has been given a newly created seat on the committee, where only the most central ministers sit.
These are Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen (S), Minister of Defense Troels Lund Poulsen (V), Minister of Foreign Affairs Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) and Minister of Justice Peter Hummelgaard (S).
