The United States and Great Britain have finalized a new trade agreement, which President Donald Trump and Prime Minister Keir Starmer have signed, respectively. The White House in the United States announced this late Monday evening Danish time.
The two leaders are both in Canada, where there is a meeting of the G7 countries. Here they meet the press, and Donald Trump shows a document, writes Reuters.
- We have signed, and it is finished, says Trump.
He adds that the relationship with Great Britain is absolutely fantastic. Keir Starmer says that agreements have been reached for, among other things, aviation and tariffs on cars. He does not elaborate on what has been agreed.
- This is a really good day for both our countries, a sign of strength, says Starmer.
Great Britain quick to reach agreement with the US
Three unnamed sources have previously told the news agency Reuters that the agreement also concerns trade in steel, ethanol, and beef.
The White House says that US Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick will now draw up a quota for how much steel and aluminium Britain can export to the US without tariffs.
Great Britain was the first country to reach an agreement with the US in the spring on lower tariffs, after Donald Trump imposed high tariffs on goods from a wide range of countries. But the details still need to be negotiated.
From the British side, Trade Minister Jonathan Reynolds says the agreement is a major victory for the aviation and automotive industries.
- Trade agreements can take months to implement, yet we are delivering the first set of agreements in a matter of weeks. And we are not stopping there, he says.
The British minister says the two parties have agreed on mutual access to 13,000 tonnes of beef. At the same time, work continues to ensure good conditions for the pharmaceutical industry in Britain, he says.
