A revision of the rules for the activities of public housing departments is intended to make it easier for the million Danes who live in public housing to choose green solutions such as solar energy and shared charging stations for electric cars. This is stated by the Ministry of Social Affairs and Housing.

From now on, housing departments can rent solar panels and produce electricity for their own consumption. The limit for the capacity of the system will be raised from 6 kW to 8 kW, and it will be possible to install batteries together with the solar panels. In addition, housing departments will be entitled to rent out roofs and facades to private actors who wish to operate solar panels.

Shared charging stations will also be easier to establish. A public housing department can now own charging stations together with, for example, homeowners' or cooperative housing associations, and private companies can in future be responsible for both establishment and operation.

The new options will be part of the revised secondary activity executive order. The executive order determines which activities social housing organizations may carry out in addition to their core task – to build and rent out social housing – and must ensure that such activities support community and sustainability without entailing financial risk for the residents.

- We must remove unnecessary constraints for solar cells on roofs. That is why it is good that we are getting rid of some of the cumbersome rules that can get in the way of those who want to contribute to a greener Denmark. Green transition is also a showdown with workflows that once made sense, but which now need to go. It is green action that works, says Lars Aagaard, Minister of Climate, Energy and Utilities.

The revised executive order will enter into force on 1 July.
