
The energy and telecommunications company Norlys warns that in recent days, unknown perpetrators have posed as Norlys and threatened recipients with power cuts in text messages. Norlys writes this in a press release.
The text messages state that the recipient has unpaid electricity bills with Norlys, and that the power will be cut off if the recipient does not pay. However, Norlys is not behind the text messages. Therefore, the request is that if you receive such a text message, you delete it.
- It is very regrettable that our name and brand are being misused in this way, and we can only recommend that customers delete messages, says Mads Brøgger, director of Norlys' energy business, in the press release.
Norlys also sends text messages to customers who have unpaid energy bills. However, Norlys never links directly to the bill, it says. Instead, the company refers to the bill that the customer has already received.
Norlys also emphasizes that the company would never turn off customers' electricity at such short notice. Before turning off the electricity, the company will have sent several reminders and tried to make direct contact, it says.
If you as a Norlys customer are in doubt about whether you have unpaid bills, you can see an overview of your bills on Norlys' customer page. You can also check your online banking or payment service, the advice says.
In June, the Ministry of Social Security and Emergency Preparedness reported that three out of four Danes have been the target of digital fraud attempts.
This could be, for example, through trade between two parties, online shopping or so-called phishing, where a hacker can try to lure information from the recipient of an email or text message. It can also happen via so-called spoofing, where a fraudulent SMS or call can be manipulated to appear to come from a specific phone number.
In 2024, the government and the telecommunications industry presented three initiatives to help combat digital fraud. The initiatives are text message filtering, extended spoofing protection for fraudulent calls, and phishing protection in MitID.
