Environmental activists have sprayed orange paint on several of the stones at the world-famous Stonehenge formation, located about 135 kilometers from London. This is according to a post on the social media X by the group Just Stop Oil on Wednesday.
Here, protesters in white T-shirts can be seen spraying paint on Stonehenge, while several people try to stop them. Two have been arrested, local police said in a statement according to the news agency Reuters.
The group Just Stop Oil has become known after several similar actions in the UK. Just Stop Oil has blocked traffic on major thoroughfares, disrupted cultural events and thrown soup on a painting by Dutch painter Vincent van Gogh.
The group wants the British government to stop extracting and burning oil, gas and coal by 2030.
Stonehenge is a prehistoric monument located in Wiltshire in southern England. It consists of a series of standing stones that are over four metres high. It is one of England's most famous attractions. The stone formation is believed to have been built in six stages between 3000 and 1500 BC.
Stonehenge is on the UNESCO World Heritage List along with other attractions such as the Taj Mahal in India and the Great Pyramids of Giza in Egypt.
English Heritage is the organisation that manages and preserves Stonehenge. The organisation did not immediately respond to a Reuters request for comment.
