MIDDELFART: The City Council of Middelfart has entered into an agreement to  increase the production of wind and solar energy tenfold in order to become self-sufficient in electricity from renewable energy by 2030. This is written by Middelfart Municipality in a press release.

The agreement, called "Climate Action NOW", is part of the municipality's green transition. In the agreement, Mayor Johannes Lundsfryd Jensen (S) says that the municipality must take responsibility for its share of the climate challenges. In addition to becoming self-sufficient, it is about ensuring cheap and green electricity around the clock.

- Electricity consumption in Middelfart Municipality is currently approximately 250,000 MWh/year and is expected to double in 2030. This requires a significant expansion of renewable energy production, which is currently only 50,000 MWh/year, says the mayor.

From second worst to leading

The agreement text states that not a single wind turbine has been installed in the municipality in the past 24 years, and the installation of solar cell systems has only recently begun. In a recent report published in Fyens Stiftstidende, Middelfart was the municipality on Funen that produced the second-least green electricity.

Therefore, there are also six projects in the agreement that - if they are all approved - will contribute with a planned annual electricity production of between 540,000 and 610,000 MWh, which will make Middelfart self-sufficient.

In order to establish such large energy plants, it is central, as stated in the agreement text, that citizens who are affected by the establishment of renewable energy plants are involved. "There must be a systematic and clear involvement of citizens and investors in the processing of the specific projects," it says.

In addition to more renewable energy, the agreement text also includes projects on the use of surplus heat, biogas plants, CO2 capture and more nature. The parties will follow up on the agreement annually, the first time in the spring of 2025.
