The diplomatic process with the US must continue on its agreed track, even though US President Donald Trump is taking the process by surprise with tariff threats against Denmark. This was stated by Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen (M) to DR and TV 2 on his way to a meeting with the Norwegian Foreign Minister in Oslo.
Here he is asked about the visit to the US Vice President, J.D. Vance, and Secretary of State Marco Rubio, have been wasted work, now that the president continues his aggression against Denmark.
- It can never be wasted to take care of one's diplomatic work, which in addition to the meeting with the vice president and the secretary of state was also an opportunity to speak to the American public and to a number of American decision-makers, says Lars Løkke Rasmussen to the two television stations.
On Saturday evening Danish time, Donald Trump announced that he will impose an additional ten percent tariff on Denmark and the countries participating in military exercises in Greenland from February 1. This is because the countries' deployment of troops in Greenland, according to Trump, is a security risk.
- This is a very dangerous situation for the safety and survival of the planet. These countries, which are playing this very dangerous game, have introduced a level of risk that is unsustainable, Trump wrote on his media Truth Social.
Lars Løkke Rasmussen points out that it is a "surprise". This is because the Danish side believes that with the armament in Greenland, they are actually doing what Donald Trump has asked for - to take better care of the Arctic. Still, he will not declare the diplomatic track dead.
- No, we must stick to the diplomatic track. We have not received any other reports than that what we agreed on at the meeting the other day, we must continue to work on, he tells the TV channels.
