Electricity and ambient heat from heat pumps are increasingly taking up more of the heat supply. Heat pumps use electricity to utilize heat from the surroundings, and together they make up the total heat production.

Danish Energy Agency: Heating supply in Denmark is becoming more electric

The deployment of both small and large heat pumps helps to increase electricity consumption and contribute to a decrease in the use of fossil fuels.

The electrification of the heating supply in Denmark continues.

The Danish Energy Agency's final energy statistics for 2024 show that the production of heat from large heat pumps and electric boilers in the district heating system increased by 17 percent from 2023 to 2024. Similarly, the production of heat from small heat pumps in households increased by 10 percent in the same period.

At the same time, there is a decrease in the use of fossil fuels.

- Electrification of the heating supply is an important step in the green transition. Both large and small heat pumps are a very efficient way to produce heat, and they run on electricity rather than fossil fuels. Electrification of the heating supply is therefore an important step towards Denmark achieving its climate goals and achieving a green and sustainable energy sector, says Deputy Director General of the Danish Energy Agency, Stine Leth Rasmussen.

The statistics also confirm the trends that were in the preliminary energy statistics from March:

  1. The consumption of coal fell by 36 percent in 2024 compared to 2023.
  2. A good 80 percent of the total annual electricity consumption was covered by renewable energy in 2024.
  3. The increased number of electric cars on Danish roads also leaves its mark on the statistics, including through a decrease in gasoline consumption of approximately 5 percent.

The final energy statistics are the Danish Energy Agency's most comprehensive statistics on Denmark's energy production and consumption. You can delve even deeper into the energy statistics here.
