Danish Business and Green Power Denmark: Denmark lacks an electrification plan

The organizations are calling for political initiatives that can accelerate the electrification of transport, heating and industry. The two organizations are calling on the government to present a plan within a year and have themselves prepared four benchmarks.

The electrification of Denmark is going too slowly, Green Power Denmark and the Danish Chamber of Commerce believe. Today, electricity only accounts for 20 percent of total Danish energy consumption, which places Denmark 23rd in Europe.

In a joint press release, the two organizations call for political initiatives. They see this as necessary to boost the sales of heat pumps and electric cars as well as the electrification of industry.

- It is far from good enough that Denmark is number 23 in Europe when it comes to electrification. We can and must do better. European companies pay more than four times as much for gas and twice as much for electricity as their American competitors, and this weakens our competitiveness. The medicine for lower energy costs and higher security of supply is massive electrification and the transformation of Europe's energy system, says Brian Mikkelsen, CEO of Dansk Erhverv.

Danish Erhverv and Green Power Denmark have set four benchmarks that they believe should be the basis for a political electrification plan. They recommend that a concrete electrification plan be prepared within a year, that gas for heating households be phased out in 2035, that tax structures be adjusted to accelerate the sale of electric cars, and that a green deduction be introduced for investments in electricity-based plants, heat pumps and electrical processes.

- We are far too dependent on fossil fuels. We must replace them with self-produced green electricity, and this can only go too slowly. In addition to the climate, more sustainable electricity benefits our common security, citizens' energy bills and companies' competitiveness, says Kristian Jensen, CEO of Green Power Denmark.

According to the Danish Energy Agency, over 90 percent of industry's energy consumption can be converted to electricity. But the organizations point out that bureaucratic application pools and limited transparency are delaying development. Therefore, they propose to abolish the current support pools and instead introduce a green deduction for investments in electricity-based plants, heat pumps and electrical processes.

- There is no doubt that many companies would like to electrify. But more are hesitant to take the step, as it can be a large financial investment here and now. Therefore, politicians should help and encourage companies to make the green and electric choice, says Kristian Jensen.
