There is "a real chance that Ukraine can prevail" in the war against Russia if the country continues to receive the Western support that the Biden administration has set an example for. This is what US President Joe Biden told reporters at the White House, about ten days before Donald Trump takes office.
- Putin is in a difficult situation right now, and I think it is very important that he is not given any leeway to continue doing the terrible things that he continues to do, he says.
Putin's difficult position is due, according to the outgoing president, to the fact that the US and Britain imposed extensive sanctions on Russia's energy sector on Friday. This applies to oil giant Gazprom Neft, among others.
Britain also believes that the sanctions are putting pressure on Russia, says Foreign Secretary David Lammy in a statement.
- Going after Russian oil companies will drain Russia's war chest, and every ruble we take from Putin's hands helps save Ukrainian lives, he says.
Biden spoke with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Friday. Here, Zelensky thanked Biden for the United States' "unwavering support," Zelensky writes on X.
The outgoing president has tried to send as much support to Ukraine as possible before he leaves office. It is feared that Republicans will cut the support sharply. The Biden administration announced nearly $6 billion in new military and economic aid last month.
Trump claims he can resolve the conflict between Ukraine and Russia in "24 hours" when he takes office, raising fears that Ukraine will have to give up territory in exchange for peace.
Russia's advance in Ukraine last year was further fueled by the overstretched and exhausted Ukrainian army's lack of manpower.
