Development of large PtX project in Aalborg has been put on indefinite pause

European Energy is not actively developing PtX plants in Aalborg, and the port has now offered the areas to other parties.

The ambitions were high when European Energy and Port of Aalborg signed a letter of intent to build a PtX plant at Aalborg East Harbour.

The letter of intent secured European Energy an option on a 25-hectare area at the East Harbour in Aalborg, which was planned to form the framework for an electrolysis plant with a capacity of 120 MW and an associated e-methanol plant.

- We are not only looking at this area because it is fun and because we think it should be done. We actually see it as our “license to operate” and where a large part of our future business will be. Companies will come that work with green technology and the more green technology we have in our area, the more we believe we can attract new players, said Jesper Raakjær, Head of Development at Port of Aalborg, in a Børsen interview.

However, it now appears that the plans have been put on hold indefinitely. This is reported by Nordjyske and Energy Supply.

Emil Vikjær-Andresen, head of Power-to-X at European Energy, writes in an SMS to Energy Supply that the facility at Aalborg East Harbour is not a project "that we are actively developing at the moment."

The development manager at Port of Aalborg tells Nordjyske that the 25 hectares that were originally intended for European Energy's project have today been offered to another party.

- The areas we had intended for European Energy have been released for other projects in the last few years, says Jesper Raakjær.
