AABENRAA: Aabenraa Municipality has received 10.5 million. DKK from the European Investment Bank to map and develop the green hydrogen economy in the border region.

"The grant is a significant step in the work of developing the emerging hydrogen ecosystem, where private investors, knowledge institutions and public actors on both sides of the border are involved," it is stated in a briefing to Economics Committee.

The project will enable Aabenraa to attract investments earlier and on better terms, and it can create new jobs within green energy and Power-to-X.

"The grant shows that even a smaller municipality can assume a strategic role of national and international importance for great local benefit," it continues.

More positive effects

At the same time, it opens up opportunities for educational and research activities in collaboration with universities and vocational schools, which can also strengthen business tourism in the area.

Although the grant is large, the municipality assumes no financial risk. The European Investment Bank is responsible for the administration and selection of consultants, while Aabenraa acts as a liaison and ensures that the project's results are anchored regionally.

The focus is particularly on value chains for e-methanol and e-SAF, where the Port of Aabenraa and local companies can become key players.

A broader perspective

According to the municipality, the project strengthens the entire Danish-German region both economically and in relation to the green transition, as it lays the foundation for new investments in green energy and Power-to-X, with a particular focus on the value chains for e-methanol and e-SAF.

The project also gives the Port of Aabenraa and local companies the opportunity to take a central role in the new value chains.

The initiative also supports cross-border economic development and the EU's green goals, while identifying additional projects in South Jutland that can be financed through the European Investment Bank and other European mechanisms.

"At the same time, it opens up new educational and job opportunities in both South Jutland and Schleswig-Holstein, creates increased Danish-German cooperation and coordination of green goals, and positions the region as a European beacon for hydrogen and green fuels - with Aabenraa Municipality as a central driving force," it concludes.
