US President Donald Trump has signed an executive order offering certain tariff exemptions to trading partners that enter into agreements on industrial exports - including nickel, gold, pharmaceuticals and chemicals.

This is reported by the Reuters news agency.

Trump, who was inaugurated into the White House in January, has focused heavily on a new tariff policy. He wants to reduce the US trade deficit and obtain concessions from countries that are trading partners of the US in negotiations in this area.

According to Reuters, the latest decree lists 45 categories where a zero import tariff can apply to what are called allied partners.

This applies to partners that enter into framework agreements on Trump's so-called retaliatory tariffs, it says.

According to Reuters, the decree means that the US's tariffs will be in line with the country's obligations in the framework agreements that already exist with, for example, Japan and the EU.

The exceptions for countries that have entered into agreements with the US are scheduled to come into effect at 06:01 on Monday Danish time.

From Trump himself, it sounds like his willingness to reduce tariffs depends on "the scope and economic value of a trading partner's obligations to the US in its reciprocal trade agreement".

It also depends on The US national interests, it says.

The exceptions will apply to goods that cannot be grown, mined or produced naturally in the US - or cannot be produced in sufficient quantities.

The goods mentioned in the decree include graphite and various types of nickel, which are a crucial material in the production of stainless steel and batteries for electric cars.

This also applies to substances used in generic drugs, such as the anesthetic lidocaine and reagents used in tests for diseases.
